Desiree Rodriguez is a writer, teacher, geek girl, and proud young latina woman.
Her first job was at Michaels Arts and Crafts as a cashier. Within her first two years she was promoted due to her skills in customer service, organization, diligence, and leadership. Her final year with the company was spent working as a the Customer Service Manager until she left to pursue a career in childcare.
She was then hired by the Boys and Girls Club of America and stayed with the organization for two years. Within those two years she climbed up from a school-age intern to the Lead Teacher of her 5 to 7 class. There she continued developing her skills in creating interpersonal relationships and nurtured her love of working with children.
During this time Desiree also rediscovered her love for writing. Having won awards and praise in high school for her stories and papers she decided to take up her pen again. In 2014, Desiree had written for Paper Droids, The Young Folks, and The Feminist Wire. Currently Desiree is a Staff Writer for Women Write About Comics. An entertainment website that covers various media related topics from a specific feminist lens discussing in depth fictional forms of media.
She is currently employed with Girls Inc as a 3rd Grade Literacy Teacher. Teaching girls to be smart, strong, and bold, through the methods of education, empowerment, and betterment. She works hard with a strong team to enrich the lives of the young girls in the program.
She will begin attending college in the fall to further her education in English and Literature. Desiree has plans to write her own series of novels, as well as screenplays and comic books, further along her career while continuing to work in journalism.
Desiree is a long time lover of comics, books, TV, movies, and other related media. She loves talking about feminism in comics, her favorite childhood cartoons, how race intersects with gender and orientation, and her favorite 90s anime shows. Her favorite superheroes are Anya Corazon, Tim Drake, Koriand'r, and Steve Rogers. Her real life inspirations include, Nelson Mendela, Gina Rodriguez, George Perez, her family and close friends. She is going to attempt cosplaying as Zatanna at her next convention.
